Orientating yourself to the Cordillera Blanca
The Cordillera Blanca is part of the Andean chain and spans 200KM or 124 miles, running South to North West, with Huaraz located right in the middle. The mountain chain holds some of the highest tropical glaciers in the world and is home to over 700 glaciers and over 300 accompanying crystalline lakes.
The Lazy Dog Inn is located in the South Central area of the Cordillera Blanca, on the map look East of Huaraz and we are located in-between where it’s labeled Wilcawain and the split-off that leads to access to some of the most picturesque valley’s in the Cordillera Blanca such as Llaca, Cojup, and Churup. Enroute to the Llaca and Cojup Lakes, you will see some of the most impressive glaciers in the area, and Churup Lake offers stunning views of both the Cordillera Blanca and Negra.
Some of the more well-known hikes such as Llaganuco Lakes and Laguna 69 are approximately 3 hours from Huaraz in the opposite direction of The Lazy Dog Inn. Look for Yungay located on the map above, and up (East) from there you will find Llaganuco Lakes and the trailhead for Laguna 69. While these tours can be accessed from The Lazy Dog Inn, it makes for a 14-hour day when factoring in driving. When staying with us we recommend visiting the closer, less-known treks, to enjoy the pure, natural beauty without the crowds and the trash that comes along with them, and to save you from several hours of driving/ or riding in a tour bus.
